En una noche de fiesta como cualquier otra en Lower East Side de Manhattan, Devin Yalkin llegó a un edificio gigante guiado por una masa de gente. La música sacudía las paredes casi como si el metro pasara debajo de ellos.

De un momento a otro se encontraba frente a una lucha de box ilegal, como sacada de las mejores películas de Hollywood, y rodeado de un centenar de gente exitadísima.

Aunque el boxeo nunca le pareció atractivo, este espectáculo y la incertidumbre del entorno atrajo la curiosidad del fotógrafo de 30 años de edad, por lo que de un momento a otro se vio a sí mismo asistiendo a una, otra, otra y otra pelea, algo que le permitió entender la verdadera esencia de esa escena under.

Yalkin comenzó a documentar sus imágenes en blanco y negro en noviembre del 2010, retratando no sólo las peleas o la arena, sino también la emoción y euforia de los espectadores. “Estas peleas de box no sólo me inspiraron para volver al trabajo documental, también me permitieron experimentar con métodos de larga exposición para así agregar elementos abstractos a las fotografías” y añade “Mi objetivo es capturar que lo que siento, es la verdadera esencia de una pelea, documentando la acción, el sonido y el sentimiento caótico tanto como pueda a través de la fotografía”.
