The best street corner to go to in Santiago when you have the munchies

It was a little more than a year ago when I realized that I had discovered the best street corner to munch in Santiago.

I have kept it a semi-secret until now (I’ve only told my closest friends), but the culinary pleasure I’ve gotten from that place is so much that I can’t help but spread the word about these dope hole-in-the-walls.

I am talking about the corner of Pio Nono and Dardignac. If you know where I am talking about, don’t close the tab yet. Give me a minute to explain. Yes, its true that this is also one of the “worst” streets corners in Santiago. It is a short distance away from the bars of Pio Nono, in all their grimy glory. But we have to recognize that cheapness is their redeeming quality. A liter of beer for $1000 pesos? This is a better price than some liquor stores in rich neighborhoods. Anyways, these bars are not the best thing about this street corner.

Start your visit here in La Fabrica de Pizza, which I believe to be the best pizza in Santiago. Tripavidsor has got it wrong when it grants the honor to Tiramisu. Not only are the pizzas of La Fabrica de Pizza delicious, but they are also big and cheap. I always order the capresse, which has rucula, goat cheese, and cherry tomatoes for the reasonable price of $6.500 pesos. And it’s the perfect size to share. Other pizzerias sell pizzas that are more than enough for one person but leave you hungry if you share it. I imagine that they do this on purpose so that you buy two, or order something else off the menu. Besides pizza, they have sodas and big bottles of beer. That is all. They focus on their specialty. And be careful, don’t go with an empty wallet because they don’t accept card.

After the pizza, cross the street and order a churro from the van that is parked at the corner. The churro is everywhere in Santiago but these are special. They are not like the ones university students sell outside the metro. These have just been taken out of the frying oil and so are hot and crunchy. You can order it with jam or manjar filling, but I prefer it with manjar because it melts and then…uff, orgasmic. And the best part? It only costs $700.

So, there it is. You know my secret. Maybe does it not seem like much but I ask you to try out this itinerary before you judge me. Meet up with a good group or your partner, smoke a joint, and enjoy. And if later you want to hit up one of the neighborhood’s nightclubs, you will still have the money to do so.
